Christmas Prayer

Darkness and dreary we are born
Lifeless and weary do we walk
Troubled souls too tired, too worn
Chained to the ground, no key for our lock

If there was a light, if there was a key
If we could but fight, if we could but find
But our lands grow nothing not even a tree
And most have already lost their mind

But greatly we hope for the one to come
And greatly we grope for light in the dark
Therefore we ask thee, O Lord, for your sun
To free us from despair, Lord, hear us and hark

Surely you observe, O Savior, O Dayspring
Our willingness to serve, O King, O Wisdom
Of thee, O Jesse’s Root, we would gladly sing
To thee, O David’s Key, we praise with beating drum

We ask you to enter into our inner being
To clean and to center our innermost thoughts
Like you entered on Christmas, a manger seeing
Lifting those who sought you to kingly lots

Give us this Christmas the courage to seek
The wisdom to love, the love to behold
This Christmas we ask for all to be meek
As you were, as a babe, born into this cold
